After learning this, you might not want to buy packaged custard again
You will need:
- 1 cups of milk
- 2 teaspoon of sugar
- 2 table spoon of cornstarch
- 1 whole egg
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions:
- In a saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it is just about to boil. Remove it from the heat before it actually starts boiling.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the egg yokes, sugar, and cornstarch until well combined and slightly thickened.
- Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture while whisking continuously. This is called tempering and prevents the eggs from scrambling.
- Pour the mixture back into the saucepan and return it to the stove over medium heat.
- Cook the custard, stirring constantly, until it thickens and coats the back of a spoon. This usually takes about 5-7 minutes. Be careful not to let it boil.
- Once thickened, remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract if using.
- If you want a smoother texture, you can strain the custard through a fine-mesh sieve to remove any lumps.
- Allow the custard to cool slightly before serving, or chill it in the refrigerator if you prefer it cold.
- Enjoy your homemade custard on its own, with fruit, or as a topping for desserts like pies or cakes.
